The basic concept of neurostimulation is to electrically stimulate various parts of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves). This stimulation can often reduce pain significantly. This approach almost always starts with a “trial” in which the leads are placed and the patient can experience what it is going to feel like for a period of time. If the trial is successful, the leads are placed under the skin along with a small battery (implantable pulse generator) so nothing is visible or external.
